Sculpture definition

Sculpture is an art form in the true sense of the word, it is made by carving and modeling different types of materials.
The characteristic that mainly distinguishes painting from sculpture ( Marble , Wood , Terracotta , Wax , Porcelain , Clay ) is dimensionality.
While painting is two-dimensional, Sculpture in the Round is represented three-dimensional.
There are three techniques for making a Sculpture :

1. Carving: hard materials are processed and, in order to Sculpt the Sculpture , pointed tools are used.

2. Modeling: the Sculptures are modeled freehand, using tools such as spatulas, burettes, etc. Other raw material is added to the initial Sculpture to work it in detail.

3. Fusion: you start by standing up a wax sketch and from here, you have to cover this model with reinforced clay, to prevent it from shattering during cooking. At this point insert some tubes, to ensure that during cooking, the Bronze is able to enter and the wax to come out. Now the clay has become terracotta and we have our Bronze Sculpture .

History of ancient sculpture

Ancient Sculpture has always had the task of transmitting the values of ancient art to the new generations, thanks to its ability to remain intact over the years.
Western Sculpture has had a very jagged trend over the years, with particular influences from the classical canons.
We note how in antiquity the stylization of the figure prevails in Sculpture in the Round , especially the human one, to then reach a level of balance between realism and idealization with Greek culture.
With the Roman Empire the Greek model of Classical Sculptures remained unchanged.
During the Middle Ages sculptors tried to interpret Sculpture as an emotion detector, as opposed to what occurred in the Renaissance which after a while managed to recover the classical canons.
In the nineteenth century , Ancient Sculpture followed the developments of art, completely detaching itself from Classical Sculpture and bringing the flows of abstract art into the era.

OGANOG0106011
Fuller's Cylindrical Slide Rule London England Early 20th Century

Fuller's Spiral Slide Rule

Fuller's cylindrical slide rule. It consists of an outer wooden cylinder that slides up and down and rotates, covered with paper marked with a graduated spiral logarithmic scale; inside is a longer wooden cylinder, also covered with paper marked with decimal tables. A brass index is screwed to the top of the neck, a second, longer brass index is screwed to the mahogany base and marked with a scale. The outer sliding cylinder is marked near the top: “FULLERS SPIRAL SLIDE RULE”; at the bottom it's marked: “ENTD. STATS. HALL / STANLEY, Maker, LONDON". The upper part of the long brass index is engraved: 1791 (/) 1903, for which it can be assumed (as for another similar specimen, preserved at the National Museum of American History) that the first is the serial number, while the second the year of completion. George Fuller, professor of civil engineering at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland, patented this instrument in 1878; the Stanley firm produced about 14,000 Fuller spiral slide rules in nearly a hundred years.
