Fresco on canvas. Signed lower right. Further signature and technique on the back. Placed in the informal Emilian naturalism, Bruno Saetti's painting is distinguished by a significant love for the pictorial material, rich and consistent, pasty and fermenting, but also open to the modulations of luminous vibration. His series of "frescoes" with the Sun as the dominant subject is rich, as in this work, which presents a large bright sun shining on a brick red background, above an indefinite landscape, where only a basilica can be recognized at the top right. If Saetti's Emilian origin is evident in the warm tones of the red bricks and in the very peculiar taste of the material (the favorite fresco), on the other hand the Venetian contamination is recognizable (Saetti lived for a long time in Venice) in his lingering on the color, on its luminous vibrations, on the feeling of astonished amazement of space. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Bruno Saetti (1902-1984)

Born in Bologna in 1902, Bruno Saetti was a painter and engraver. He studied at the Academy of Bologna and in 1927 he set up his first solo exhibition. He subsequently participated in the Venice Biennale, thanks to the creation of the work "The Judgment of Paris". He participated in other subsequent editions and in 1929 won the Baruzzi prize. In 1930 he moved to Venice at the age of twenty-eight, remaining in the lagoon city for his entire life, and here achieving great successes such as the prize at La Biennale. He became a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and took on the role of director from 1950 to 1956. In 1931 he participated in the Rome Quadrennial and in 1935 he dedicated himself to the artistic practice of frescoes, following a visit to Pompeii. In the following years he created numerous frescoes in various public buildings, obtaining many awards. He also ventured into the field of graphics (drawings, engravings, lithographs), glass decorations and mosaics. He was also a painter of sacred art and participated in numerous exhibitions with this theme. He took part in large international exhibitions, organized by the Venice Biennale, which took place in Prague, Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, Sofia and Bucharest. Finally, he held an anthological exhibition in Venice in 1975 and one in Florence in 1979. Bruno Saetti died in Venice in 1984 at the age of 82. His funerary monument, in the Campo Carducci of the Certosa di Bologna, was designed by him.

Technical specification: Fresco

The fresco is a painting done on plaster, in fact, still fresh, of a wall: the color is chemically incorporated and preserved for an unlimited period of time.
