Description
World first edition (printed November 15, 1957). Translation by Pietro Zveteremich. The Editor's Note summarizes the editorial history of this novel: "Boris Pasternak finished this book more than 3 years ago. In 1956 and 1957 the Soviet radio and the magazine Znamja announced its forthcoming publication in the Soviet Union. our publishing house, knowing the value of the Author, took steps to secure the publication rights [...] We thus received a copy of the manuscript directly from the author [...] In relation to the preparation of the Italian edition, a correspondence between the author and the Soviet publishing house regarding the values of the book and its publication date. On this occasion, an agreement was reached that the Italian edition would not be published before September 1957. At the end of summer, when the publication was imminent and there was nothing to predict that difficulties regarding publication had arisen in the USSR, we received a request for the return of the manuscript from the author, who expressed his desire to see it again. However, we found ourselves unable to access the author's desire as the book was already in an advanced state of work [...] We therefore present to the Italian public this edition in the original draft for which it was agreed at the time with the 'Author of the publication. We believe that this edition of Doctor Zhivago brings honor not only to the Author, but to the literature itself to which he belongs". In the USSR the novel was not published due to a veto from the Soviet censors, and this by Feltrinelli therefore turned out to be the first world edition The success was immediate: the second edition bears the printing date of 20 November 1957.
