All'alba del 12 settembre 1919 un migliaio di granatieri, fanti e arditi marcia alla conquista di Fiume, crocevia di culture ed etnie, unico sbocco al mare del dissolto regno d'Ungheria. A guidare i «ribelli» c'è il Poeta-soldato Gabriele d'Annunzio, deciso a rivendicare alla madrepatria la città, abitata in maggioranza da italiani. L'intrepida avventura militare aumenterà il prestigio internazionale del Vate e gli conferirà uno straordinario credito politico presso le masse di reduci e arditi, studenti e futuristi che, di lì a poco, confluiranno nel fascismo mussoliniano.Ma il «sogno» durerà poco. Nel dicembre 1920, il presidente del Consiglio Giovanni Giolitti ordina lo sgombero della città e con l'uso della forza, dopo cinque giorni di scontri sanguinosi, decreta la fine dell'impresa. Osannato dalla folla, d'Annunzio abbandona a malincuore Fiume per ritirarsi nella gabbia dorata del Vittoriale, ma l'avventura appena conclusa finirà per imprimersi come evento-simbolo nella tormentata ridefinizione dell'Europa postbellica. A novant'anni da quegli eventi, Mimmo Franzinelli e Paolo Cavassini rievocano le tappe essenziali dell'impresa fiumana con una selezione di oltre trecento fotografie, introdotte da un interessante saggio che attinge a fonti in gran parte inedite. Fiume è il racconto per immagini, storicamente rigoroso e suggestivo, dell'avventura politica che, prima ancora dell'avvento del fascismo, segnò la crisi dello Stato liberale italiano.

A landmark book on Africa revisited: The origins, history, and prospects of big game in Africa Researched, photographed, and compiled over 20 years, Peter Beard's End of the Game tells the tale of the enterprisers, explorers, missionaries, and big-game hunters whose quests for adventure and "progress" were to change the face of Africa in the 20th century. This landmark volume is assembled from hundreds of historical photographs and writings, starting with the building of the Mombasa Railroad ("The Lunatic Line") and the opening-up of darkest Africa. The stories behind the heroic figures in Beard's work--Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Courtney Selous, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Denys Finch-Hatton (the romantic hero of Out of Africa), Philip Percival, J. A. Hunter, Ernest Hemingway, and J. H. Patterson (who became famous as the relentless hunter of the "Man-Eating Lions of Tsavo")--are all contextualized by Beard's own photographs of the enormous region. Shot in the 1960s and '70s in the Tsavo lowlands during the elephant-habitat crisis and then in Uganda parks, Beard's studies of elephant and hippo population dynamics document the inevitable overpopulation and starvation of tens of thousands of elephants and rhinos.

Originally published in 1965 and updated in 1977, this classic is resurrected by TASCHEN with rich duotone reproduction and a new foreword by internationally renowned travel and fiction writer Paul Theroux.
