Description

This complete edition of the theater by Alexandre Dumas Fils (probably incomplete in its 6 volumes) presents several characteristics that make it particularly precious: first of all it comes from the library of the Castle of Ermenonville; then it is a limited edition, as indicated on the buttonhole: “Tiré à 52 exemplaires sur papier de Hollande N°26. Exemplaire de…..” . But above all it is the handwritten dedication that makes it a unique piece: “Madame Madeleine Lemaire Hommage de son tout dévoué ADf”. Autographed dedication by the author to one of the protagonists of the Parisian social life of the Belle Epoque: renowned watercolourist, one of the most sought after salonnière, probable lover of Alexandre Dumas Fils, it was she who introduced the young Proust into the aristocratic salons of Paris: in his atelier Proust meets Reynaldo Hahn and Robert de Montesquieu who will have great importance in his life. And as often happens with Proust's friends (and enemies), Madeleine Lemaire is reflected in the Recherche: with her habit of being called "la Patronne" by her fidèles and her describing as "boring" those who did not bow to her prestige , Madeleine Lemaire lives an immortal life in the legendary Madame Verdurin.
